Let's talk about the typical essential oil business owner.
We'll call her "You", ok?
When you were invited to start building a business, you said something like this: "I just want people to KNOW about these oils! If I earn money, great, but that's not my main reason for doing this. I just want to help people feel better. That's my WHY."
Isn't that sweet?
Yes. Super sweet. And people loved you for it. (And they still do).
So what happened next? You started teaching classes.
A LOT of them.
And people started buying oils from you.
A LOT of them.
And then those people had questions for you.
A LOT of them.
I mean, let's be real here. People don't just buy our products and immediately know how to use them. The education we provide our customers is pretty indispensable. And back when you were trying to save the world teaching people about essential oils, it felt really good to be the one people came to. It was exciting to get phone calls and emails and texts from the people on your team. You were needed!!! You were in high demand! You were the expert!
But then you realized something. You were NEEDED. You were in HIGH DEMAND. You were the EXPERT.
After a while, it started feeling heavy. Overwhelming. Exhausting. There were TOO many texts, TOO many emails, TOO much time on the phone. It wasn't fun anymore. There was too little time with your kids, too much distraction, not enough balance. Maybe you didn't have builders, or you didn't have upline support, or you didn't have family support. Maybe you felt like you were pulling a really heavy wagon ALL...BY...YOUR....SELF.
It was just LONELY.
This wasn't what you signed on for. Doing the business used to be fun, like the best hobby in the world. Not only was it rewarding and amazing and fulfilling, you actually got PAID for it! So when did it start feeling like WORK? When did you start wanting to ignore your phone, avoid your email, or crawl in a cave and hide??
When did your desk (if you even have one) become a mound of business cards, sticky note reminders, enrollment forms, flyers with scribbled notes about people you met at the park, mini-health histories on your customers, and receipts-you're-supposed-to-write-off-but-no-one-ever-explained-what-that-means-or-how-to-do-it-so-they'll-probably-still-be-there-next-year???
How did this happen?
I'll tell you how. You didn't start out as a business, you started it to save the world. And thank you for that, you have a beautiful heart and you're PERFECT for the cause!
But it's a PROBLEM because you don't have training in business SYSTEMS and STRATEGY and OFFICE MANAGEMENT. You aren't a marketing expert, and you don't have a degree in Education Technology or International Business or Organizational Management. You started this business of changing the world because you are a GIVER. And that is beautiful.
But if you give TOO much to your business, your family starts to suffer.
And it might be ok for a little while, it might simply be the cost of building a business, the planting before the harvest. You might be alright with the sacrifice...for a time. But if it goes on too LONG, and your family suffers too MUCH, you'll find yourself asking questions you never imagined yourself asking when you were fresh off the "save the world with oils" press. Those nagging questions will stop by for a visit more and more often until they decide to just take up residence within you.
Yes, you are. You really, really are.
You are so needed, so don't give up. You're just tired. Overwhelmed. Frustrated. Lonely.
But you don't have to be.
